Global programme: Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation, Volkswagen Stiftung and Carlsberg Fondation
Specific programme: -
Call: Call Challenges for Europe
Project number: S129542
Duration: 39 Months (1/18/2021 - 4/30/2024)
Project Manager: D'Errico Francesca
UNINETTUNO Scientific Leader: Marinella Paciello

Summary

The main aim of the STERHEOTYPES project is to promote awareness of the psychological processes emerging from racial hoaxes, particularly in the new digital generations, by fruitfully combining methodological approaches from psychology and computational linguistics. Scholars from three Mediterranean European countries are involved: France, Italy and Spain. In particular, the psychological team will carry out experimental studies in educational contexts with the aim of understanding the social and psychological processes that arise from online racial hoaxes that carry stereotypes and prejudices.

The computational linguistics teams will examine stereotypes and prejudices from an intercultural perspective by analyzing multilingual corpora related to racial hoaxes in different countries, collected from online newspapers and social media and from students interacting in controlled contexts with a tailor-made app created for the project.

Description

STERHEOTYPES: STudying European Racial Hoaxes and sterEOTYPES is a project funded by the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation, Volkswagen Stiftung and Carlsberg Fondation with the aim of promoting awareness of the psychological processes that emerge from racial hoaxes. The project involves Italian, French and Spanish researchers in the fields of psychology and computational linguistics.
The innovative contributions of this project are:

  1. Launch of research on European digital natives as a 'sensitive' target of misinformation.
  2. Understanding the socio-psychological processes involved in misinformation by exploring the "protective" and "risky" individual characteristics of young digital users.
  3. Give a European perspective to the study of stereotypes in new technological contexts by adopting an ecological methodological framework.
  4. Comparison of three European countries from automatic detection based on real annotated corpora involving three neglected languages within this realm.
  5. Development of corpora with finer annotation and computational models for automatic detection of cognitive and emotional roots of racist discourse.
  6. Implementation of a theory-based educational technology tool for promoting awareness in digital natives (for teachers and industries).
  7. Interdisciplinary exchanges to improve stereotype detection by integrating psychological and linguistic perspectives.

The main aim of the STERHEOTYPES project is to promote awareness of the psychological processes emerging from racial hoaxes, in particular in the new digital generations, by fruitfully combining methodological approaches from psychology and computational linguistics.
