Description of the Course

This course will broaden your understanding of the competitive nature of the tourism, hospitality, and events sectors, as well as giving you the ability to operate in an increasingly globalised business environment.
After studying with us, you will be able to apply for a range of managerial roles in public or private sector tourism, hospitality, and events organisations both in Europe and internationally.

What will you study?

This course covers the essential concepts of management in the booming sectors of tourism, hospitality, and events, including business strategy, operations management, project management, and leadership across cultures.
The degree uses hands-on teaching methods to reinforce your learning, such as case studies, visits to exhibitions and businesses, guest speakers, and classroom discussions. You will also undertake a four month internship, giving you work experience in tourism and hospitality, as well as studying the German language for 4.5 hours per week.
This will help you apply lessons learned from your studies to the workplace and support your ability to work in the international market with its demand for a range of language skills. 

Entry Requirements

Academic Qualifications 

Strong undergraduate degree from a recognised university
If you do not meet the academic requirements, you may be assessed on relevant work experience. To take this route, you must have a minimum of 3 years management experience.

Proof of English 

IELTS 6.0 (not less than 5.5 in any component), PTE 50 + score or equivalent.
The English proficiency test can be waived by the following candidates:

  • English native speakers
  • Applicants having completed their schooling in English (i.e. High School Diploma, IB)
  • Applicants having completed their undergraduate degree in English in an English speaking country

Course Structure

Semester One

  • Tourism and Hospitality Business Strategy

    This module considers the strategic options, issues and challenges facing the business leaders of Hospitality sector. It will focus on strategy formulation, planning, implementation and an evaluation of business impact in terms of strategic alignment. The module will present and evaluate a variety of analytical models, techniques and concepts, considering their utility and application to a range of contexts.

  • Strategic Approach in Marketing Planning for Hospitality

    This Marketing module explores the key contemporary theories and approaches of marketing in the hospitality industry.  It will enable the building of knowledge and the application of the tools and techniques required to critically analyse, appraise a market and the factors that affect it, identify target groups and formulate appropriate marketing mixes within the marketing planning framework.

  • Hospitality Operations Management

    This module is designed to emphasise the strategic importance of operations management to the overall performance of hospitality organisations. This module provides the student with the opportunity to practice operational management skills and apply theoretical concepts in real life situations.

  • Cross Cultural Management 

    This module examines cross-cultural issues and how these impact upon management by interpreting and critically evaluating the underlying theories of culture and applying them in international business contexts. The module will be delivered in a form of lectures and seminars and both of them will include real life examples, participative exercises (role-plays, problem solving exercises) and multimedia.

  • German Language Studies

Semester Two

  • Event Management (Strategies and Contemporary Issues)

    This module provides students with an in-depth understanding of the key principles of events management and the specialist skills required for a range of different roles.
    Additionally, this unit is concerned with the application of management practice in event management to the creation and development of events. The module looks at the interesting and exciting challenges of working with stakeholders and the vital event management skills required by the events industry.

  • International Project management

    The International project management module provides a base level of key skills used by project managers in order to manage projects successfully. The module is not specific to any one industry but covers the basic principles of project management that apply in all industries and to projects of all sizes.

  • Entrepreneurship in Tourism and Events

    This module provides students with a practical opportunity to apply concepts of modern entrepreneurship and integrate knowledge learnt during the course and enables them to think more strategically when faced with the challenges of bringing new ideas to the tourism market. It explores how an organisation can encourage innovation and entrepreneurship and the processes used to manage enterprise.  Students are given the opportunity to explore their entrepreneurial skills by researching their own ideas – a product or service – and producing a business proposal for their chosen venture.       
    Additionally, entrepreneurship module provide students with a deep understanding of the definition and scope of entrepreneurship and an understanding of the enablers and barriers to business start-up. Examples of entrepreneurs and start-up organisations will be discussed and students will be expected to draw on local, personal and general knowledge together with their learning to be able to identify the characteristics of entrepreneurial ventures.

  • Business Decision making for Hospitality and Events

    This unit explores the use of financial statements and financial tools for decision-making in a tourism/hospitality business context using financial ratios. 
    The module aims to provide students with the analytical and communication skills necessary for the understanding of financial resources with an emphasis on problem- solving techniques in hospitality organisations.   

  • German Language Studies

Semester Three

  • Research Methods and Dissertation

    This module provides students with the opportunity to undertake a research investigation into a specific business challenge, issue or problem culminating in a formal thesis with detailed findings and recommendations. The module will not only offer potential links with employers, but will also demonstrate the application of research principles to real-world situations. The module will provide students with an integrative bridge between the theoretical areas of their study and the determination of applied solutions and/or evidence-based conclusions.
