The role of mathematics in the development of the plasma physics: this is the focus of the study day, organized by the Mathematics Department of the International Telematic University UNINETTUNO in cooperation with the CNR (Italian National Council of Reseach), aiming at promoting the participation of Italian mathematicians to formulate and solve relevant theoretical questions linked to plasma physics.
Plasma is the state of visible (and probably even dark) matter that is mostly widespread in the Universe; consequently, it is of the highest interest in astrophysics, in particular in the most recent research works on the black holes, neutron stars, gravitational waves, on the heliosphere (space physics) etc. Plasma is also the state in which matter is if you try to obtain controlled nuclear fusion and therefore it is of great applicative interest. Last, but not least, some industrial processes are based precisely on the use of plasma.
