Course description |
Adopting a comparative, interdisciplinary and inter-semiotic perspective, the module aims at an investigation of the contemporary narrative in it’s disparate expressions (literature, cinema, music). Preliminarily there will be illustrated the principal theories of narrative, from M. Bachtin to G. Genette and R. Barthes, thus providing the basic tools for the analysis of narrative, literary, cinematographic and more generally audiovisual texts. Discussing later on the most recent changes occurring within the world literary scene and due to phenomena such as migration and post-colonialism, the course introduces various examples of the new world-literature, focusing in particular on the Italian case. The theoretical keys relating to concepts such as transculturality, postcolonialism and translingualism will therefore be provided, focusing on these concepts on the concrete level of narrative textuality, and showing the interconnections with the wider cultural system |
Prerequisites |
A good command of the Italian language and a school-level knowledge of the Italian and European Literature are required. |
Objectives |
The course aims at supplying and more mature, comparative and interdisciplinary, approach to narrative texts. The students will also have a deeper insight into the theories and writings of transculturality and postcolonialism, in order to arrive at a vision of contemporary literature as a dynamic whole capable of communicating the complexity of the self and of the other. |

The main topics of the video-lessons held by Fabio Vittorini (IULM, Milano) and Nora Moll (UTIU) are: the concept of intertextuality and transculturality; narrative theories; a perspective on postcolonial theories and new trends in European literature, derived from the phenomena of post-colonialism and migration; the analysis of transcultural narrative texts in Italian; the concept of literary globalism; the rewriting of History; the imagological analysis of the narrative text. |

Furthermore, it is requested to read almost three narrative texts discussed by the video-professors; it is also recommended to view the films which are analysed during the course. |
Exercises |
From the practical point of view, the course is accompanied by a series of discursive exercises, among which the student will choose three deliverables (two of which are mandatory), linked to authors and topics he has studied in depth. These exercises are designed to allow students to put into practice the historical, critical and theoretical knowledge transmitted by video lessons, interactive class sessions, in-depth materials, forum discussions and tutorial meetings. The single exercises focus on the study of authors and texts and consist of:
- a narratological and critical-comparative analysis of narrative texts of the twentieth century worldwide;
- critical and analytical insights related to the Italian transcultural literature;
- the analysis of the construction of the image of the Other in narrative texts.
