Master in European Union Studies: Cultures and History, Policies and Global Perspectives (Anno Accademico 2023/2024)

MODULO 4 - The Global Trade Policy of the European Union

CFU: 8
Lingua contenuti:Inglese
Descrizione dell'insegnamento

The international trade environment has changed dramatically in recent years. Traditional trade ties are constantly shifting as a result of changing political and trade equilibriums that either disrupt, break or alter supply chains. At the same time, new regional and sectoral trade agreements create opportunities to take advantage of the dual transition to green and digital economies.

In a contested world, trade policy can play an important role in international cooperation and in supporting national policies of equity and inclusion.

This course aims to provide students with the tools and sensitivity to navigate this complex trade landscape.

Prerequisiti

No particular prerequisites are needed to attend the course.

Scopi

The lectures in this course provide an understanding, partly through a focus on economic policy and through graphical analysis, of some of the phenomena of international trade, such as the effect of tariffs to imports and exports, and dumping or government support processes.

Special attention is paid to free trade agreements, whether plurilateral, multilateral, regional or bilateral. Finally, the main international treaties and the European Union negotiation process are analyzed.

Contenuti

The course aims to provide students with fundamental knowledge regarding the international market and the economic interactions’ tools that are at the core of global trade policies. EU policy will be analyzed and discussed per se and in relation to other global powers, in light of the most recent "trade wars".

Esercitazioni

At the end of this module, the student is expected to answer to open questions related to the main issues the video-lectures refer to.
