Course description
The course of Public Economics focuses on the role of the government in the economy. The aim is
to provide a general understanding of the rationale for public intervention in the economy,
thorough the analysis of market failures. A brief overview of social insurance programs is
discussed. The course also covers the challenges of raising revenue, that is how to design taxes. An
overview of the economic effects of tax policy is provided.
Prerequisites
A good knowledge of theoretical fundamentals of both microeconomics and macroeonomics is
required
Objectives
At the end of the course, students should be able to analyse the relationship and interaction between
State and market in all the most important spheres of the public intervention with a particular
attention to the solutions of the market failures and the effect of taxation on economic behaviours
