L'abstract dell'evento:

In 2004 Brain machine interfaces as a token for all neurotechnologies was considered by IEEE as one of the technologies with the potential to change the world. In fact in the last decades humanity has seen impressive accomplishments in the field such as powerful demonstrations of brain control of robotic prosthetic limbs development and consolidation of sensorial prosthesis and the proliferation of neuromodulation methods. On the other hand, its grandiose potential is far from being fully achieved. In fact the area sometimes seems to develop in peristaltic movements in which breakthroughs are quickly ensued by long intellectual radio silence and with major hype being intercalated with strong criticism and skepticism. It happened that the old promises of sometimes mythical proportions give vision to the blind and raise the crippled has directly collided with the daunting complexity of the neurophysical interactions between brain and machine. Colossal is the challenge. Fortunately experts and practitioners are now able to use informed skepticism to put the field and its claims in a more mature perspective that differentiates true possibilities from science fiction. At the same time, exciting disruptive ideas are being met by strong progress of the neuroscientific framework on how the brain operates and by unprecedent technological development in materials biotechnology electronics and computer sciences. This has just spurred a new era in which neuroengineering is finally being transformed into a consolidate medical and technological discipline and an industrial powerhouse. In this lecture I will talk a bit about this story while presenting some of the most promising innovations that are pushing forward the neuroengineering frontier in both the academic and industrial ecosystems. The presentation will cover topics like in silico mechanistic investigation for rational design of neurotechnology temporal spatial complex neuromodulation personalized intervention cutting edge neural interfaces closed loop systems, and the usage of neuromorphic approaches
