This course aims to introduce students to the evolution of the “Made in Italy” Design and Architecture from the beginning of the 20th century up to the present days, focusing on how Italy developed a very particular design and architecture able to interpret modernity through the relationship with history and places and to develop the idea of postmodernity as alternative programme to the linear evolution of modernity itself. The module is composed by two different typologies of lessons: the first lessons will be monographic on some of the main figures of architecture of the 20th century; the last three will instead give a general outline of design from the economical boom up to the early 2000s.
Scopi
By the end of this module students should be able: * to demonstrate a general understanding of the Italian architectural history from the beginning of the 20th century to the early 2000s; * to understand and distinguish with a critical approach the different Italian design trends; * to develop and consolidate critical reading methods of stylistic elements of Italian Architecture from the beginning of the 20th century up to the 1980s; * to improve skills and methods to manage historical references regarding the complexity of Italian architecture and design of the 20th century. * to argue Italian modernism through a focus on the major figures of architecture and design of the 20th century.
