Content language:Italian
Course description
The course aims to provide the student the fundamentals of Soil and rock's Mechanic. In this context, the course is set in a unified way, though, it is divided into parts of Soil Mechanics (instructor: Prof. Renato Lancellotta) and Rock Mechanics (lecturer: prof. Giovanni Barla)..
Prerequisites
To pass the exam of Technical mechanics it is necessary also to pass the exam of Structural mechanics.
Objectives
As regards the part of the Soil Mechanics - the objectives to be achieved are as follows: 1 - Assimilating the porous medium to continuous mixtures, learning the interaction rules between the constituent phases (definition of effective stress and the fundamental postulate: measurable effects depend on the effective stress). 2 - Learn the distinction between materials, fine-grained and coarse-grained materials, understand the meaning of configurations drained and un-drained and their implications. 3 - Bring the mechanical behavior of the lands within the critical state theory, understand the equal role of effective stresses and volume changes, assimilate concepts such as peak strength, dilatancy, critical state. 4 - Aim at the problems of limit equilibrium in the theory of plasticity and resolve elementary problems applying the static theorem and the kinematic theorem. 5 - Understand the influence of geological history (depositional events and post-depositional events) on the mechanical response of natural materials. Similarly, for the part of Rock Mechanics - The objectives are: 1 - Provide an updated view of mechanics and engineering of the rocks, with reference to the basic elements for the study of rocks and rock masses in view of applications. 2 - Learn to describe and classify qualitatively and quantitatively the rock in the sense of a material, the rock mass and the discontinuities, always keeping in mind the application problem. 3 - Bring the mechanical behavior of rocks and rock masses in the light of the investigations and tests that are conducted in the laboratory and on site, dedicating special attention to the simulation of the behavior of rock masses, in view of design. 4 - Describe the methods of design and dimensioning (in empirical, rational and observational sense) of the geotechnical constructions on rocks and their supports. 5 - Provide, through the presentation of case studies, an overview of the application problems of interest in civil engineering and more generally in the management / protection of the territory.
Program
The course consists of the parts of the Rock and Soil Mechanics
Book
