Course specific objectives
The specific training objectives are those of supplying the graduates with a methodological training which makes use of all basic, mathematic, physical, chemical, computer skills and knowledge about specific subjects which characterise civil and environmental engineering, enabling them to meet and solve in a satisfactory way technical problems, even advanced ones and enabling them to complete their training by obtaining a Master’s degree. The graduate in Civil and Environmental Engineering acquired basic knowledge about basic mathematics, general and applied physics, of materials and of the structures used for civil constructions, about electrotechnics and plants, of graphical representation and land survey, public works and environmental laws, hydraulics, economics and property value. In addition, he has working knowledge to the main basic disciplines and of some applicative disciplines of civil and environmental engineering. The cultural and professional profile of the graduate in Civil and Environmental Engineering is therefore that of technician having a suitable cultural background and a good basic training and knowledge of the most important disciplines characterising the sector of the civil constructions and land management measures, paying particular attention to environmental questions that allow him to plan land management measures, to manage civil plants and design simple public works. The share of activities at the student’s disposal for individual study or for other individual training activities is 68% of the total workload, unless training activities with high level experimental or practical activities are envisaged. The training path aims at integrating skills in the civil sector with those in the environmental one. Broadly speaking, the first year is characterised by a basic scientific training, the second one by basic engineering training, whereas the third year allows studying more in the depth the subjects that are more professionalising and allows choosing between disciplines that are more linked to the environmental area or those that are typically more linked to the civil area.

Knowledge and understanding
In compliance with the principle of European harmonisation, the skills of the graduates of the Degree Course in Civil and Environmental Engineering meet the specific requirements defined by Dublin’s Descriptors. In particular, the Degree Course in Civil and Environmental Engineering aims at supplying the following knowledge and comprehension abilities:
The methodological training and the information needed to allow the student to acquire all these above-mentioned capacities are distributed in a coordinated and progressive way during the lessons of all subjects and training activities included in the study course.
The assessment as it regards the attainment of the training objectives by each single student is carried out in an organic way in the frame work of all the tests on the student’s progress envisaged by the study programme.
Applying knowledge and understanding
Ability to identify, formulate and solve problems related to civil and environmental engineering (structural and geotechnical problems of civil, industrial and infrastructure constructions also considering the questions related to their impact on environment; problems linked to the planning and design of work aimed at protecting the territory; problems linked to the design, realisation and management of environmental control and monitoring systems) using the most advanced methods, techniques and tools.
These capacities are acquired making online exercises, which usually have a monographic and design character, in which the capacities to interact within a group, with other students carrying on activities in the virtual laboratory.
Independence of judgements and relative possibility of developing logical and deductive considerations, indispensable to work in an independent way and to access the labour world, with particular reference to solid cultural bases and transversal connection of notions learnt (all didactic units) and assessment and interpretation of experimental data.
Methodological training and the information required to allow the student to acquire all the above-mentioned abilities is distributed in a coordinated and progressive way in all the disciplines and training activities included in the study programme. The assessment of attainment of the training objectives by each single student is carried out in an organic way within all the assessments envisaged within the study programme.
This objective is attained as follows:
Skills in oral, written and multimedia communication by presenting in an exhaustive way one’s own thinking in order to be able to exchange general information, present databases, to be able to dialogue with experts in other fields, both in the Italian and English language and the relative capacity to make team work. Capacity to communicate in an effective way, both in writing and orally, in at least one language of the European languages, beside Italian.
These skills are developed during regular training activities envisaged and in different occasions for discussion and exchange of views during team work using collaborative learning tools (virtual laboratories, video chat etc...)
Skills to be able to learn in view of developing and studying more depth further knowledge, with particular reference to continuous updating of knowledge by consulting bibliographical material, databases etc… ; this is also useful to access second-level degrees, first-level master’s courses and for being authorised to work as junior engineer. They are skills that can be acquired during the entire training path. The learning skills are assured by a mastery of basic knowledge and by methodologies of critical analysis allowing and promoting lifelong learning in further educational and professional choices. The assessment of the acquisition of these skills is made in accordance with was said above.
Knowledge required for entry (DM 270/04, art 6, paragraphs 1 and 2)
In order to be admitted in the Degree Course in Civil and Environmental Engineering the student has obtained a high school diploma or equivalent title obtained abroad whose validity is acknowledged for this degree course. In addition the student is required to possess or to acquire an appropriate starting training and more specifically a good knowledge of spoken and written Italian, capacity of logical reasoning, knowledge a capacity to use the main results of elementary mathematics and of the foundations of experimental sciences. The knowledge required for entry will be checked upon enrolment, as better specified in the didactic rules. In case of training debits, the student will be asked to attend training support courses in the basic disciplines.
Characteristics of the final test
The final exam will consist in the preparation of short paper in one of the disciplines learnt by the student or in a project that is consistent with the professional activity of the candidate that will be assessed by a Commission including 5 professors.

The typical professional operational fields of the graduates in Civil and Environmental Engineering are those of design, realisation and maintenance of civil, industrial and infra-structural works; of works aimed at protecting mountain slopes, protection of rivers and shores and environment control and monitoring systems - as free-lance professionals and in companies and public agencies.
This degree course, supplying a sufficient mastery of scientific methods and contents, beside the acquisition of the most advanced technologies in the civil and environmental sectors, prepares to the professions included in the wider range of civil and environmental engineering. Beside works and system design activities, the graduate will be able to work in the public administration, in companies and businesses operating in this field playing an active role as manager of engineering questions.
