The University Degree Course in “Communication Science” aims at training graduates equipped with a sound cultural preparation and a good mastery of the methods of analysis, in a environment that is today deeply and continuously changing driven by the digitization of the communication processes, by market and cultures globalization, by the evolution of the professions and by the relational dynamics made possible by the Internet.
The course trains graduates qualified to operate in the various sectors of communication, in public and private settings, at institutions, associations, agencies, businesses, publishing houses, newspapers, creative communication agencies and in institutions organizing cultural events, media centers, advertising brokers.
The general structure of this study path draws on the disciplines of the humanities area and on disciplines of the sociological and massmediology area, enlarging the educational project according to an interdisciplinary and knowledge mutual integration perspective. Actually, the path is designed balancing disciplines having a largely theoretical character with disciplines adding a practical-operational profile to the theoretical dimension:

Knowledge and understanding
The Degree course allows to acquire basic skills in the field of communication sciences. As a whole, the courses prescribed in the humanities, sociological, economic, computer, psychological, juridical, linguistic and artistic areas supply a deep insight into communication theories, technologies, means and languages, with a specific reference to their digital dimension. The student develops capacities to understand and critically interpret the dynamics characterizing communication processes and media products in the current historical and social setting. The learning process takes place with the support of appropriate educational materials and learning assessment tools: as regards the educational materials, each course has a sufficient number of face-to-face videolessons, synchronic interactive meetings (interactive classrooms based on the skype for business platform) and diachronic ones (forums) and textbooks and/or scientific articles; as regards the assessment tools, the above-mentioned interactive meetings and the exercises have the function of mid-term assessments, whereas the final assessment is carried out through final written and oral exams.
The student who completes his study path successfully possesses a strong capacity to critically interpret communication processes and masters the methodologies of analysis typical of the social sciences (qualitative and quantitative) applied to events linked to media production and consumption in the fields of information, corporate communication, art, entertainment, tourism and advertising. The whole range of courses, in their disciplinary articulations, supply the student with the ability to concretely work in the professional contexts of corporate and institutional communication. The ability to apply knowledge is reached also through laboratory-based training and seminar activities involving the development of communication-expressive abilities (verbal and technological) referable to those requested in a professional environment. These activities allow the graduate to acquire the skills to design, edit, develop, monitor and manage, through trans-media tools, a wide range of communication artifacts, being supported by expert tutors in the relative sectors and by teachers coming from professional environments.
In particular, the ability to apply knowledge and learning is continuously assessed during interactive meetings (interactive classrooms, forums). In the disciplines with a more markedly applicative character, these are integrated with targeted practice work. The concrete application of what is learnt in the learning process is also provided by activities envisaged by workshops on the professions of digital communication (with a specific focus on social media), entrusted to eminent professionals in the field of technological innovation applied to communication. At the end of the workshops the student will be able to autonomously communicate a project work which, through the “learning by doing” approach, allows for actually putting into practice the contents learnt connecting them to a real case. The participation to workshops assures, therefore, the ability to apply knowledge and to understand the big world of digital communication.
Written and oral exams assure the final assessment of the skills for applying knowledge and understanding.
During the study course the student develops critical and autonomous reasoning skills as regards critical aspects of communication messages, its impact on public opinion and the psychosocial implications of the use of digital technologies. The University’s dialogic and interactive teaching modes assure the full development of the potentials for these skills. In particular, the whole sector of the interactive teaching activity, the systematic use of interactive classrooms and of forums, allow to develop an autonomous capacity of judgment. Actually, during the interactive training activities and practice work the student is led to explicate, illustrate and discuss his knowledge and his point of view. In addition, the development of autonomous learning and critical appreciation skills represent one of the specific objectives of the final exam.
At the end of the learning path the student will be able to clearly and effectively communicate, in the Italian as well as in the English language, also by using suited multimedia supports and technologies, the contents related to the different communication contexts according to their specificities. The communication skills are developed also through interactive teaching activities (interactive classrooms and forums), the participation in laboratories and workshops and the completion of the exercises requested in the framework of the individual courses. These exercises require the preparation of papers include the preparation of text, visual and audiovisual and multimedia products. The interactive training activities imply the student’s ability to effectively transfer to other subjects (teachers, tutors and students) and to share with them his own knowledge and ideas. The final exam itself (in its preparation and, in particular, in its public presentation) represents a significant communication performance envisaging a proper use of fitting verbal and technological tools and is relevant to the objectives of the training path.
At the end of this study path the graduate possesses learning skills that are functional to pursuing this learning adventure with a higher-level study course (second-cycle degree, master’s course) in the various sectors of communication: journalism and publishing systems, advertising and corporate communication, multimedia production etc.
The above-mentioned teaching activities allow to promote the development of learning skills; this process is constantly monitored by the teachers-tutors. The “hands-on” learning activities offered in laboratories and workshops further enhance the practical and operational nature of this study path, making it rewarding in a professional environment, in particular.
Knowledge required for entry (DM 270/04, art 6, paragraphs 1 e 2)
The students wishing to enroll for this degree course must have obtained a secondary high school degree or other equivalent title obtained in Italy or abroad. No specific preliminary knowledge is required, except for suitable both written and oral expression skills in the Italian language, a sound basic cultural background and an aptitude for studying these disciplines adopting a systematic approach. It is also required a basic knowledge of the English language, corresponding to the A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and in the use of the main computer tools. This knowledge will be assessed through a compulsory test to check the actual skill-level and the test operational modes will be specified in the didactic regulations of the study course where additional training requirements (ATR) are also included and the relative remedial classes arrangements if the results obtained in the test show any gaps or difficulties. As regards the knowledge of the English language, the aim is that of assuring to both female and male students the achievement of an intermediate level, corresponding to the B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages by making them attend the course and pass the final exam.
In order to complete his training path the student is required to prepare and discuss, in a public session, an original research paper allowing him to apply the knowledge acquired during his study course. The final exam allows the student to demonstrate his mastery of an appropriate methodology and of good tools of analysis and capacities of critical appreciation as regards a specific case study. The student prepares a final paper by himself, even if under the supervision of one or more supervisors, selected among the University’s lecturers. The supervisor supports the student in defining the subject, the working approach and in searching for bibliographical and document references referring to his sources. The paper can include, beyond the text, even multimedia materials (pictures, videos, audio, digital objects). The paper submission is made according to the modes established by the University and it represents a compulsory requirement for its final discussion. The admission to the final exam is conditional upon the completion, on the student’s part, of all the exams and training activities envisaged by the study program. The final paper is assessed by an Exam Commission gathered in a public session in which framework the candidate illustrates the most relevant aspects of his paper, even using multimedia technologies and materials and answer any questions asked by the Commission. The assessment of the final exam is carried out by the Exam Commission on the basis of the originality of the contribution, of the candidate’s skills to work by himself, of the appropriateness of the applied methodologies, of the appropriateness and completeness of the sources he used, of completeness and effectiveness of the oral illustration, of the comprehensiveness and accuracy of the answers to the Commission’s questions.
Employment and professional prospects for the graduates (Decrees on Classes, Art. 3, paragraph 7)
The graduates will be able to find a job in the organizations and companies working in creative-production industries, in fields devoted to marketing, branding, advertising and content management of companies and public and private institutions. In particular they will be able to find a job in the entertainment and edutainment industry, in the publishing, advertising and marketing industry, in cinema-television companies and in the audiovisuals sectors, in general. Other professional prospects can be represented by positions in public boards and private companies dealing with the organization of cultural events and activities.
